We are here to provide local knowledge and first class customer service within the Whitby property market
Aside from working as estate agents in the Whitby area for over 30 years, both Jon & Emma also live here. Emma moved here at a young age along with her retired grandparents, was educated here and has worked in Whitby all her life. Whilst Jon chanced upon Whitby some 20 years ago and fell in love with the town and the surrounding countryside, so decided to stay and raise his family here. We’d like to think we understand why people like living here so much and hope that we share some of the communities values and aspirations. Local knowledge and first class customer service are at the forefront of everything we do in our agency. Our staff will work with you from the moment you enter our offices to the signing of the last pieces of paperwork.
Meet The Team
Jon Burghope is the “Hope” part of the Hope & Braim partnership and along with Emma Braim established Hope & Braim Estate Agents in Whitby in 2020. Jon is likely to be the first person you meet from the Agency if you are thinking of selling, as he is responsible for carrying out market appraisals. Jon has a wealth of experience of valuing properties in the local market having worked for a decade with two other agencies in the town prior to starting-up Hope & Braim Estate Agents. Having attended Art School in Cambridge, he has an interest in all things visual and has a leading role in the look of the agency and how properties are presented by doing the photography. A strong believer in the power of positive thinking, Jon will always try to find a way to improve your chances of selling and achieving the best price possible. When he has not got a camera in his hand, he will most likely be out and about in the countryside either walking his dog, riding the trails on his bike, or watching his children playing sport and shouting encouragement too loudly.
Emma Braim is obviously the “Braim” behind the Hope & Braim partnership and brings a wealth of local knowledge, having worked in Whitby her whole life. Emma is the go-to person if you are looking to sell or buy in Whitby and the surrounding area, as she seems to know everyone and what they want before even they do. Emma runs the office and will arrange everything from organizing a viewing to negotiating the sale of your home. Having worked for another Estate Agency in the town for 15 years, she knows the local property market like no other and brings an enthusiasm to getting the deal done. Her work does not stop with an agreed sale, as she will work on your behalf to help make the process as smooth as possible whilst keeping you informed all the way through. Emma is passionate about providing the best customer service possible and will often go beyond what is asked to ensure a successful outcome. When she is not talking on the phone, you will find Emma with her menagerie of animals out on the Moors.
Lindsay Shaw is the most recent recruit to the Hope & Braim team. She is the office “Girl Friday” and you will encounter her when you visit our office or out and about when accompanying our buyers whilst showing them around our properties. A genuine people person with a sunny nature and a wealth of experience in delivering excellent customer service. She spent 10 years working for the government, and prior to that she was a buyer at Harrods, and managed her own florist business. More recently Lindsay and her husband Steve moved to Egton in 2020 and are currently refurbishing their home. When not a work, Lindsay loves to spend time in her Greenhouse, walking on the Moors with her family and two spaniels, or chilling in her beach hut.
Romeo is the general dogs’ body and brings a great deal of experience of all things canine, having been a dog all his working life. He only works part-time with an occasional visit to the office where his main duties include looking out of the window, scratching at the door, or sleeping on the sofa. If you have the delight in meeting him be sure to give him a tickle and a doggie treat, and you will have a friend for life.
Samaritans is a charity working across the UK and Ireland to reduce the number of people who take their own lives and help people who are struggling to cope.
Hope & Braim are proud to support this worthy charity which will be the focus of our donations going forwards. We will pledge 2% of all our selling fees to the charity for 2021. If you would like to contribute towards achieving our target of £5,000, you can use the Justgiving link below.
We have the honour of being one of the first to advertise our property with Hope and Braim. From start to finish we cannot fault the service we have received. We were impressed with Jon’s evaluation and knowledge and understanding of the local market. Emma kept us informed at every step and the process could not have been smoother. Five days after advertising we accepted an offer, and our sale was completed in 6 weeks. What a great team!
We would not hesitate to recommend Hope and Braim. From start to finish Emma and Jon were professional, knowledgeable, conscientious, kind and thoughtful. Thanks to Emma’s expert knowledge we had a buyer in days! We wish them every success for the future. Thanks for everything!
Absolutely amazing estate agents to deal with. Always prompt, helpful and friendly. We are so pleased with the service provided. The purchase of our dream holiday cottage completed within just 6 weeks, thanks to Emma & Jon’s wealth of knowledge and experience. We couldn’t be more thrilled and would highly recommended.

Emma and Jon’s approach is professional, responsive and conscientious. They are a great team who offer a fantastic service. We fully recommend!
The team at Hope and Braim continue to provide me with up to date news so that I can make informed decisions. They are polite, professional, trustworthy and go beyond what is expected of Estate Agents. This enables them to attain the highest standards.
Would just like to say thank you to both Emma and Faye for everything. Faye went out of her way to make sure she answered all our questions about the properties we looked at and even let us view a new property which hadn’t even gone onto the internet.
“Dear Emma, just want to let you and your team know that this is a truly seamless, most satisfying experience. Faye has been helpful and thorough when showing us the property, including all nooks and corners. And you are amazing. Despite our frequent emails and numerous questions, you have been patient, meticulous and professional. Your expertise is invaluable. Thank you.”
Great service from Jon and Emma, excellent communication throughout. The property was very well publicised both in brochure and online. Thank you.
We bought the first property we viewed in Whitby – and that was with Hope & Braim. No pressure or heavy sales process- we were given plenty of time to view and reflect and given very professional and informed answers to questions we had about the property or area in general. Post sale agreement – there was a challenging completion deadline, compounded by COVID and distance and other matters etc. Emma was a reassuring rock to be working with – informed, reliable, said what she would do by when and did it. Kept us up to date and on our toes too! She did a great job managing communications between all parties. We have moved many times over the years – this was very impressive and a great burden taken away. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Hope & Braim based on our experience.”
These guys were great from start to finish. We had been helping our in-laws try to find a place for some time in Castleton. When we heard about this new business and contacted Emma with what we were looking for they came up with the perfect fit immediately and were on hand and responsive throughout the process. Well recommended.
Mine was one of the first house sales for Hope & Braim’s new estate agency. I confess I was a little apprehensive as they were a brand new company but Jon & Emma were professional and responsive throughout. They valued my property at exactly the right pitch for a quick sale. It’s well worth noting at this point that another local agency had valued it a couple of weeks earlier at £100,000 less! Once valued correctly by Hope & Braim, I had a buyer in the space of a week and the sale has now completed. Despite being extremely busy, Emma & Jon were always available or called me back when the line was busy. Emma was also brilliant at explaining the various steps of the process along the way. To be perfectly honest, I can’t fault them in any way and I’ve recommended them to many of my friends and clients. They both work so hard and they deserve every success in their new venture.
